Year 1 Overviews
Term 2, 2013
This term students will consider the question: “How can I be part of Jesus’ community?” They will identify key events, places and characters in the life of Jesus as revealed in Gospel passages. They identify similarities and differences between different Gospel accounts of key events.
Students will explore how stories are written to entertain and engage people. Students will focus on how an effective plot contributes to this and will compose a simple imaginative narrative about travelling to outer space to share with their peers. They will use their knowledge of the Solar System to enhance their narrative.
Earth and Space Sciences - ‘Up, down and all around’
This unit explores the features in our environment, both land and sky, and the fact that they are constantly changing. They will be recording short and longer term patterns of events that occur on Earth and in the sky, such as the appearance of the moon and stars at night, the weather and the seasons. They will identify the sun as a source of light.
Family Structures and Roles
Students will explore family structures and roles in the recent past and in the present and examine how they have changed and/or stayed the same. They will begin to explore the links and the changes that occur, over time.
This term students describe number sequences resulting from skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. They will identify representations of one half and will learn to tell the time to the half hour. Students will count to and from 100 and locate numbers on a number line. They will carry out simple additions and subtractions using counting strategies. They continue simple patterns involving numbers and objects. Students will order objects based on lengths using informal units and classify outcomes of simple familiar events.
